Harun Farocki (Harun El Osman Faroqhi) was a seminal German filmmaker, writer, and lecturer whose work reshaped the language of documentary and experimental cinema. Born on 9 January 1944 in Neutitschein, Sudetenland, Germany (now Nový Jičín, Czech Republic), he grew up across three continents—India, Indonesia, and later Hamburg—instilling in him a global perspective that permeated his essays on the politics of imagery. Influenced early by Bertolt Brecht and Jean‑Luc Godard, Farocki studied at the German Film and Television Academy Berlin (dffb) from 1966‑1968, where he began crafting non‑narrative, essay‑like films that interrogated the role of the image in modern society; his first major works appeared in the late 1960s, such as Die Worte des Vorsitzenden (1969) and Nicht löschbares Feuer (1969).

Over a career spanning 1965‑2014, Farocki produced more than ninety short experimental documentaries, pioneering concepts like the “operational image” in his 2000‑2003 three‑part installation Eye/Machine. He edited the influential magazine Filmkritik (1974‑1984), taught at the University of California, Berkeley (1993‑1999), and later at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, shaping generations of visual thinkers. His work was celebrated internationally, with retrospectives at Tate Modern (2009) and a landmark solo exhibition at MoMA (2011). Farocki’s personal life reflected his complex identity: married to Ursula Lefkes (1966‑1996) and later Antje Ehmann (2001‑present), he fathered twin daughters, Annabel Lee and Larissa Lu. He died unexpectedly on 30 July 2014 at age 70, leaving a legacy of rigorously analytical yet poetically resonant films that continue to influence contemporary visual culture.
