**Hardy Krüger** (born *Eberhard August Franz Ewald Krüger* on 12 April 1928 in the Wedding district of Berlin) was a German actor and author whose career spanned more than six decades. Raised in a family of ardent Nazis, he attended the elite Adolf‑Hitler‑School at Ordensburg Sonthofen and made his screen debut at age fifteen in *The Young Eagles*. His wartime service in the 38th SS Grenadier Division Nibelungen ended in a near‑execution for refusing to fire on an American squad, a trauma that triggered his break with Nazism and later inspired his outspoken advocacy against extremism. After the war he struggled financially, taking small stage roles before emerging as a leading star in 1950s German cinema with films such as *Die Jungfrau auf dem Dach* and the German version of *The Moon Is Blue*. He sought international work because he found the Heimatfilm genre shallow, and his breakthrough to English‑language audiences came with the 1957 British war film *The One That Got Away*. Over the next two decades he appeared in celebrated productions such as *Hatari!*, *Sundays and Cybèle*, *The Flight of the Phoenix*, *Barry Lyndon*, and *A Bridge Too Far*, often cast as a German officer due to his blond hair and blue eyes, a type he personally found boring and morally problematic.

Beyond acting, Krüger purchased a farm in the Ngorongoro region of Tanganyika (now Tanzania) in 1960, a place that inspired his lifelong love of Africa and provided a backdrop for *Hatari!*. Fluent in German, English and French, he toured Europe and Hollywood, eventually turning to writing in the late 1980s and publishing sixteen books, including travel memoirs and novels, four of which were translated into English. A committed democrat, he served on the board of the Amadeu Antonio Foundation and frequently spoke out against extremism, drawing on his own experiences to promote tolerance. He was married three times—to Renate Densow, Francesca Marazzi and Anita Park—and fathered three children, including actress Christiane Krüger and actor Hardy Krüger Jr. He died peacefully in Palm Springs, California, on 19 January 2022 at the age of 93.
