Gloria Marie Steinem, born on March 25, 1934, is a globally renowned American journalist, feminist, and social-political activist. Steinem emerged as a nationally recognized leader of second-wave feminism in the United States in the late 1960s and early 1970s. As a columnist for the New York magazine and co-founder of Ms. magazine, Steinem published a groundbreaking article, "After Black Power, Women's Liberation", in 1969, spearheading her national prominence and positioned her as a prominent feminist leader. In 1971, she co-founded the National Women's Political Caucus and the Women's Action Alliance, fostering an extensive network of feminist activism with an end goal of advancing feminist causes and legislation. In the 90s, along with Jane Fonda and Robin Morgan, she co-founded the Women's Media Center. Steinem was also integral in founding Take Our Daughters to Work Day, aimed at providing career learning experiences for young girls. In the late '50s, Steinem was influenced by Mahatma Gandhi and later modeled her campaign after Gandhi's independence movement. Steinem remains an influential figure in feminist political activism, lecturing internationally and advocating for issues of equality. She also participated in the Women 's March on Washington in 2017 and played a role in pushing for the protest.
