Giulio Base (born 6 December 1964 in Turin, Piedmont, Italy) is an Italian film director, screenwriter, producer and actor whose multidisciplinary background blends academic rigor with creative storytelling. He holds two doctorates—one in Literature and Philosophy and another in Theology—and has been a member of Mensa International since 1996, reflecting a rare combination of intellectual depth and cinematic vision. Base began his artistic journey in Florence, where he studied at the School for Dramatic Art under the legendary Vittorio Gassman, gaining a solid foundation in performance before transitioning behind the camera. His directorial debut came in 1991 with Crack, a film adaptation of a theater piece he had previously staged; the movie premiered at the Venice Film Festival and earned the Best First Opera prize at the San Sebastián International Film Festival, announcing his arrival on the international stage. The following year he directed the road‑movie The East, which also screened at Venice and the Toronto International Film Festival, demonstrating his penchant for trans‑continental narratives. In 1996 Base helmed Policemen, his first major European co‑production featuring French and Italian talent, which won the Best Movie award at the Festival of the Film Policiers in Arcachon. The sequel The West (1998) continued his exploration of youthful wanderlust, receiving a Special Jury Award at the Rencontres du Cinéma in Annecy. A shift toward comedic fare arrived with La Bomba – Once Upon a Time in Little Italy (1999), starring Shelley Winters, while his venture into television began with Padre Pio: Between Heaven and Earth (2000). The mid‑2000s marked Base’s entrée into Hollywood‑scale productions: Imperium: Saint Peter (2005) starred Omar Sharif, and The Inquiry (2006) – released in the United States as The Final Inquiry and distributed by 20th Century Fox, Sony and IIF – featured an international cast including Max Von Sydow, F. Murray Abraham, Ornella Muti and Dolph Lundgren. Subsequent projects such as Imperium: Pompeii (2007) and the western comedy Doc West (2009), the latter showcased at the Cannes Film Market, cemented his reputation for genre versatility. In addition to feature films, Base has directed TV movies like A Dog for Two (2010) and the 2011 remake The Sunday Woman.
