George Corley Wallace Jr., born on August 25, 1919 in Clio, Alabama, rose from a modest farming background to become one of the most polarizing figures in 20th‑century American politics. After earning a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Alabama in 1942, he served as a staff sergeant in the United States Army Air Forces during World War II, flying B‑29 missions over the Pacific. Returning home, Wallace was elected to the Alabama House of Representatives in 1946 and later served as a circuit judge, where his reputation for fairness earned him the nickname “the fighting little judge.” Disappointed by a loss in the 1958 Democratic gubernatorial primary, he adopted a hard‑line segregationist platform that catapulted him to the governorship in 1963. His infamous “stand in the schoolhouse door” symbolized his resistance to desegregation, while his populist rhetoric of “low taxes, industrial development, and trade schools” appealed to many white Alabamians. Wallace pursued the presidency four times—three as a Democrat and once as the American Independent Party candidate in 1968—winning five Southern states and becoming the most recent third‑party candidate to secure pledged electoral votes. An assassination attempt in 1972 left him paralyzed, yet he continued to serve as governor until 1987, during which time he moderated his racial views, embraced born‑again Christianity, and appointed the first Black cabinet members in Alabama history. In his later years he publicly apologized to civil‑rights leaders, met with Vivian Malone Jones and James Hood, and expressed regret for his earlier segregationist stance, before dying of septic shock on September 13, 1998.
