Three friends are droving cattle in Australia in 1939: the restless Bluey Donkin, easy-going Milo Trent and English writer Peter Linton, who is on a working holiday. Kate Carmody, a homesteader’s daughter, is in love with Bluey, but she turned down his marriage proposal two years before because he is wild and restless and a womaniser, even though he admits he loves her too. The trio’s days of cattle work give way to a larger calling when war breaks out.

When the conflict begins, the three men enlist in the Australian army and are assigned to the 9th Division, shipping out to Africa. They experience early successes against the Italians, but the tide soon turns as Rommel advances and the German forces tighten their grip, cutting off and besieging Tobruk. Between brutal assaults, the men share comic moments with a barber, Barber, and Peter finds himself drawn to Sister Mary, a nurse he meets after being wounded. The fighting proves costly, and all three are wounded in the ensuing clashes.

The campaign wears on, and tragedy strikes when Linton is killed, leaving Bluey and Milo to carry on. They endure further hardship as they repel the German assault, but their fortunes shift again when they are transferred to New Guinea. There, Bluey is injured and Milo falls to a sniper’s shot. Bluey keeps fighting, killing the sniper in turn, and eventually returns to Australia a changed man, where he is joyfully reunited with Kate. Through these ordeals, friendship, love, and resilience shape their paths, bearing witness to the costs and courage of those who serve.
