Fred Stone (born Fred Andrew Stone) was an American stage and film actor whose career spanned more than four decades, beginning in the ragged tents of traveling circuses and minstrel shows before blossoming on Broadway and eventually in Hollywood. Born on August 19, 1873 in the modest mining town of Valmont, Colorado, Stone’s family moved frequently across the Midwest, living in Kansas towns such as Garden City, Dodge City, and Wellington during his childhood. He entered the world of performance as a young acrobat and clown, later joining vaudeville circuits where his natural athleticism and comic timing shone. In 1901 he formed a legendary 22‑year partnership with fellow vaudevillian David C. Montgomery; together they captivated audiences in productions like The Wizard of Oz (1902), Victor Herbert’s operetta The Red Mill (1906) and the exotic musical Chin‑Chin (1914). Critics of the era praised Stone as a singular talent who could sing, dance, and act all at once, a claim echoed by P. G. Wodehouse who declared his 1917 Broadway appearance in Jack O’Lantern “the greatest success he has ever had.” His marriage to actress Allene Crater in 1904 produced three daughters—Dorothy, Paula, and Carol—who would later join him onstage, most notably in the 1923 extravaganza Stepping Stones where he played Raggedy Andy opposite his daughter’s Raggedy Ann.

Transitioning to the silver screen, Stone made his film debut with the 1918 comedy western The Goat and went on to star in nineteen feature films, including a memorable supporting turn as Mr. Adams in the 1935 Katharine Hepburn drama Alice Adams. A tragic 1928 airplane stunt accident left him with crushed legs and a grim prognosis of never dancing again; undeterred, he endured grueling therapy and triumphantly returned to the stage in the 1930 production Ripples. Honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and an honorary degree from Rollins College—where a theatre bears his name—Stone remained a beloved figure until his death on March 6, 1959 in North Hollywood, California. His legacy endures through his autobiography Rolling Stone (1945) and the countless anecdotes of contemporaries like Will Rogers and Ray Bolger, who revered his boundless energy and pioneering spirit.
