At Lombardy College, a school founded to give the Indian nations of North America access to higher education, Little Black Cloud, Nat Pendleton, enrolls under the name “George Black” after a humiliating hazing prank by football star Bob Hayner, Dick Baldwin. The sting of the prank weighs on him, and he contemplates leaving the campus. Ollie Stearns Jr., Elisha Cook Jr., a fellow student with a wry smile, notices the growing trouble and doesn’t quite buy into the harsh routine of campus life. Then the mood shifts when the Ritz Brothers arrive on the scene—the comic trio, with Al Ritz among them, bring their own brand of mischief and charm and persuade Little Black Cloud to stay and keep the game going.

Tim O’Hara, the aging football coach, Fred Stone, is under intense pressure to resign due to his age, while his daughter Janet, Gloria Stuart, becomes entangled in a complicated love triangle with Bob Hayner. Bob, on the college’s “coaches are out” committee, secretly admires Janet but keeps trying to win her affection by helping her father, only to stumble along the way. Meanwhile, Janet herself helps George escape from Inez, a love-struck student, as the plot threads begin to weave together in unexpected ways. George is actually very wealthy, but he keeps his money a secret, fearing that people will only like him for his fortune. The Ritz Brothers step in again, offering to pretend the wealth is theirs, much to the amusement—and relief—of everyone around them.

With the money-or-no-money question settled, Lombardy College receives a substantial gift: $50,000, donated by the Ritz Brothers on the condition that Coach O’Hara stays on and that the brothers be allowed to play for the football team. On the practice field, a shift happens as Bob is replaced by George as quarterback, and a surprising winning streak follows. Inez continues to chase George, while Janet’s feelings toward Bob begin to soften, creating a delicate balance between pride, romance, and loyalty. Cuddles, Bob’s former girlfriend played by Joan Marsh, re-enters the scene with a bold scheme that adds tension to the growing alliance between George and Janet.

The plot thickens when it is revealed that George’s participation on a company football team makes him a professional, rendering him ineligible for the college squad. Cuddles uses this information to blackmail Bob into dating her, and she spots Bob with Janet, threatening to expose George’s secret if her demands aren’t met. The stakes rise as the big game approaches, and the Ritz Brothers’ antics threaten to derail Lombardy’s chances. In a last-minute twist, the onetime underdog team fights back. With George sidelined, Bob steps in at quarterback and scores a touchdown, but breaks his collarbone just as the opposing team closes in. The Ritz Brothers sneak onto the field, their schemes nearly sabotaging the win, and in a dramatic finish, Harry Ritz delivers an improbable touchdown to seal the victory for Lombardy.

What unfolds is a lively blend of sports competition, campus comedy, and heartwarming romance, anchored by a quirky cast whose loyalties are tested and then fused by good humor and unexpected generosity. The story lingers on themes of identity, the value of friendship, and the idea that people can come together to support a larger dream—education, community, and a chance for second acts on and off the field.
