Fernanda Montenegro, born Arlette Pinheiro Esteves da Silva on 16 October 1929 in Campinho, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, is widely celebrated as the greatest Brazilian actress of all time and the grande dame of Brazilian theatre, cinema, and television. Beginning her artistic journey in the early 1950s, she first appeared on the stage in Alegres Canções nas Montanhas (1950) and quickly became a pioneer of Brazilian television when she joined TV Tupi in 1951, starring in numerous televised theatre productions. Over a career that spans more than seven decades, Montenegro has portrayed an astonishing range of characters, from the tender mother Dora in the internationally acclaimed film Central Station (1998) – which earned her a historic Academy Award nomination – to the comedic matriarch in the Emmy‑winning series Sweet Mother (2014).
