Set as a fictionalized retelling of a real historical moment, the film centers on the dramatic abduction of Charles Burke Elbrick, the American ambassador in Rio de Janeiro, by MR-8 with help from the Ação Libertadora Nacional. A student named Paulo Pedro Cardoso joins the radical movement after the 1964 coup. In 1969, he and his comrades decide to kidnap the ambassador to protest the coup, and the film traces their conspiracy and the execution of the crime. Paulo is portrayed as ‘the most intelligent and uncertain of the kidnappers.’
