Fakhri Khorvash (born Fakhri Asoudi) was a pioneering Iranian stage and film actress whose career spanned more than five decades. Born on 31 May 1929 in Kermanshah, Iran, she initially enrolled at university with the intention of becoming a doctor, but soon shifted to teaching in Tehran, where her passion for performance blossomed. Her breakthrough on the theatrical stage came in 1948 with a lauded performance in Jean‑Paul Sartre’s Dirty Hands, a role that attracted the attention of filmmakers and set her on a parallel path in cinema. Despite pressure from conservative family members, Khorvash’s husband, Javad Asoudi, supported her artistic ambitions, allowing her to appear in her first film, Bohloul, in 1958. Over the next decade she became a fixture of Iranian cultural life, navigating the restrictive climate of the 1970s while appearing in bold, often controversial productions such as Chaos (1973) and Prince Ehtejab (1974). Her nuanced portrayal of a paraplegic heiress in Chess of the Wind (1976) cemented her reputation as a daring and versatile talent, even though the film was suppressed shortly after release. In 1971 she earned the Best Actress award at the Sepas Film Festival for Mr. Naive, a performance that also garnered a Jury award at the Moscow International Film Festival.
