Erna Kamilla Schøyen, born Erna Kamille Berg on March 1, 1887, in Kabelvåg, Norway, was one of the most prolific and enduring actresses of Norwegian theater and cinema in the twentieth century. She was the daughter of the bookseller Ørger Johannes Berg (1860–?) and Kamilla Hamine Benjaminsen (1865–1938), growing up in the northern coastal town of Kabelvåg before pursuing her artistic ambitions further south. Schøyen trained as an actress at the prestigious National Theatre from 1905 to 1906, completing her formal education in just a single year before stepping onto the professional stage. She made her official debut at the Fahlstrøm Theater in 1906, where she quickly established herself as a talented performer. In 1911, she relocated to the Central Theater, beginning a remarkable association with the institution that would last nearly half a century, until 1959. Between 1920 and 1924, she was additionally engaged with the legendary Chat Noir revue theater, showcasing her comedic talents alongside her dramatic work.

Beyond her theater career, Schøyen became an important figure in Norwegian cinema, appearing in dozens of films, including several of Norway's earliest silent films. Her screen career spanned an extraordinary range of productions, from the 1916 silent film Under kjærlighedens aak through to 1965's Hjelp – vi får leilighet!. In 1951, she lent her voice to the Norwegian dub of Alice in Wonderland, and she became particularly celebrated for her mastery of the Northern Norwegian dialect. She portrayed the grandmother of Bodø in the beloved Stompa films, based on the Jennings novels. On June 19, 1910, she married the entomologist Thor Hiorth Schøyen (1885–1961), and together they had a daughter, the actress Vivi Schøyen (1918–2014), who would herself become the mother of journalist Hege Duckert. Erna Schøyen continued performing until she was nearly eighty years old, passing away on December 21, 1968, in Oslo, at the age of 81.
