Emily Barclay Ward (born 24 October 1984 in Plymouth, England) is a British‑born actress who has built a trans‑national career across New Zealand, Australia and the United Kingdom. Raised in Auckland by a general practitioner father and a landscape‑designer mother, she attended an all‑girls school where a nine‑year‑old performance as Hamlet sparked a lifelong passion for the stage. By thirteen she secured an agent, funding her early film work with a part‑time job in a video store, and continued her education with part‑time studies in English and gender studies at the University of Auckland. Her breakout came when casting director Diana Rowan discovered her in a school play and cast her as Celia in the critically acclaimed In My Father’s Den (2004), earning her the Most Promising Newcomer award at the 2005 British Independent Film Awards. Barclay then relocated to Australia, where her performance in Suburban Mayhem (2006) won the Australian Film Institute Award for Best Actress, cementing her reputation for intense, layered portrayals. In the following years she expanded into theatre, debuting in Neil Armfield’s 2009 production of Gethsemane in Sydney and earning roles in Belvoir’s That Face, The Seagull (2011) and the Melbourne Theatre Company’s The Importance of Being Earnest opposite Geoffrey Rush. Her stage work continued with Strange Interlude and a London debut at the Young Vic in Three Sisters. In film she shared the screen with Michael Cera and Kieran Culkin in This Is Our Youth (2012) and appeared in the Angus & Julia Stone music video “Big Jet Plane” (2010). A committed vegan, Barclay has been an ambassador for animal‑rights groups such as Voiceless and works with Save Animals From Exploitation.
