Ella Jane Fitzgerald, often hailed as the First Lady of Song and Queen of Jazz, was born on April 25, 1917, in Newport News, Virginia. Growing up in a modest African‑American family, she found early musical grounding in the Bethany African Methodist Episcopal Church, where she sang in the choir and discovered her remarkable vocal range. After a turbulent adolescence that included stints in a New York orphanage, she emerged onto the Harlem scene, winning an Amateur Night at the Apollo Theater in 1934 and soon joining Chick Webb’s orchestra, where her interpretation of "A‑Tisket, A‑Tasket" propelled both her and the band to national fame. Following Webb’s death, Fitzgerald assumed leadership of the group before launching a solo career that spanned nearly six decades, during which she recorded over 2,000 songs, earned 14 Grammy Awards, and became renowned for her impeccable diction, pitch, and virtuosic scat singing that rivaled the improvisational skill of the greatest horn players. Her collaborations with legends such as Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, and guitarist Joe Pass produced timeless recordings, most notably the seminal “Song Book” series that cemented her role as a cultural conduit for the Great American Songbook. In addition to her recording legacy, she appeared in films like Pete Kelly's Blues (1955) and made countless television appearances, while her charismatic stage presence made her a beloved live performer worldwide. Throughout her life, Fitzgerald faced and overcame racial discrimination, using her platform to champion civil‑rights causes, and later established the Ella Fitzgerald Charitable Foundation to support music education and health research.
