Her cinematic debut came with the Republic serial Darkest Africa, where she portrayed Valerie Tremaine, the film's heroine, marking the beginning of a fifteen-year career in motion pictures. Throughout the late 1930s and 1940s, Shepard appeared in a diverse array of productions, ranging from leading roles in minor films such as the 1940 Lucille Ball comedy You Can't Fool Your Wife to uncredited appearances in major studio productions including Topper, Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo, and the 1946 Ziegfeld Follies. One of her most prominent screen roles came in 1944 with the musical Seven Days Ashore, in which she played Annabelle Rogers, the principal love interest for a band of sailors enjoying shore leave. In her personal life, Shepard was married twice, first to Terry Hunt from 1937 to 1940, and subsequently to George F. Hartman from 1943 to 1958.
