Paul Edward Prentiss, known professionally as Ed Prentiss, was an accomplished American actor whose career spanned the golden age of old-time radio and the early years of television. Born on September 9, 1908, in Chicago, Illinois, he pursued higher education at the University of Iowa before establishing himself as a prominent voice in broadcast entertainment. Prentiss is most widely recognized for his portrayal of the titular character in the radio adventure series Captain Midnight, a role he assumed during the program's third season after auditioning successfully, replacing Bill Bouchey and continuing in the part for seven successful years. Beyond his iconic superhero persona, he demonstrated remarkable versatility by playing Ned, the neglected youth, on the beloved soap opera The Guiding Light, where he also served as the program's omniscient host guiding listeners through the narrative. Beginning in 1943, he expanded his presence in the soap opera genre by serving as the narrator for an innovative hour-long programming block that interconnected Today's Children, The Guiding Light, and Woman in White, seamlessly introducing and linking each segment for audiences. He appeared in feature films including Westbound and The FBI Story, both released in 1959, bringing his distinctive voice and authoritative presence to the big screen. On the small screen, he portrayed Dr. Snyder on the long-running soap opera As the World Turns, hosted the programs Majority Rules and Action Autographs, and played Edward Elliott on Morning Star, while also serving as the announcer for That's O'Toole. His versatility extended to the Western genre, where he frequently appeared as sheriffs and authority figures in various television Westerns of the era, including a notable 1957 appearance on Cheyenne in the episode "Top Hand" as Bob Gentry, and he delivered a memorable performance as the recorded voice reading a will on Perry Mason. In his personal life, Prentiss married Ivah Davidson on November 21, 1941, and the couple welcomed one son, born in September 1943, balancing his prolific professional life with family responsibilities until his passing in 1992.
