Don Henley (Donald Hugh Henley, born July 22, 1947) is an American singer, songwriter, and musician best known as a founding member and the sole continuous member of the rock band the Eagles. He grew up in Linden, Texas, the son of Hughlene (née McWhorter) and C. J. Henley, and began his musical journey in high school marching bands before transitioning to percussion and eventually drums. After brief stints with local groups such as Felicity and Shiloh, Henley moved to Los Angeles where he met Glenn Frey; together with Randy Meisner and Bernie Leadon they formed the Eagles in 1971, signing with Asylum Records and quickly achieving massive commercial success with chart‑topping hits like “Desperado,” “Hotel California,” and “Life in the Fast Lane.” As co‑lead vocalist and drummer, Henley’s distinctive baritone and songwriting partnership with Frey helped shape the band's classic sound, earning them six Grammy Awards and over 150 million album sales worldwide. Following the Eagles' 1980 breakup, Henley launched a solo career, releasing five studio albums including the critically acclaimed The End of the Innocence and the Grammy‑winning single “The Boys of Summer,” which showcased his ability to blend rock sensibility with reflective lyricism. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, he balanced solo projects with Eagles reunions, contributing to the band’s continued relevance and touring success.
