Djibril Diop Mambéty (January 23, 1945 – July 23, 1998) was a visionary Senegalese filmmaker whose work reshaped African cinema through daring formal experimentation and relentless social critique. Born in Colobane, a suburb of Dakar, he grew up in a Muslim Lebou family and trained as a stage actor before turning to the camera without formal schooling, launching his career with the short Contras'city (1968) that juxtaposed the splendor of colonial architecture with everyday Senegalese life. His early short Badou Boy (1970) won the Silver Tanit at Carthage and cemented his reputation for witty, satirical portraits of urban marginality. Mambéty’s first feature, Touki Bouki (1973), was produced on a shoestring budget of $30,000 yet earned the International Critics’ Prize at Cannes and a Special Jury Award in Moscow, dazzling audiences with rapid jump‑cuts, dissonant soundtracks, and a narrative that explored the hybrid identity of post‑colonial Senegal.

After a long hiatus, he returned with Hyènes (1992), an African adaptation of Friedrich Dürrenmatt’s The Visit that deepened his critique of neocolonial greed and the corrupting lure of wealth. In the mid‑1990s he began the Contes des Petites Gens trilogy, producing Le Franc (1994) and the posthumously released La Petite Vendeuse de Soleil (1999), both of which celebrated the resilience of ordinary Senegalese people facing systemic oppression. Mambéty died of lung cancer in Paris at age 53, leaving a legacy of five feature films and numerous shorts that continue to influence filmmakers worldwide. His bold synthesis of avant‑garde techniques, African oral storytelling, and incisive political commentary marks him as one of the most important voices of Third Cinema.
