Klaus Dieter Laser (born 17 February 1942 in Kiel, Germany) was a prolific German actor whose career spanned more than five decades, encompassing stage, television, and international film work. Raised in a strict Christian household, he rebelled early, leaving school at fourteen and ultimately finding his calling under the mentorship of the legendary Gustaf Gründgens at the Deutsches Schauspielhaus Hamburg. From the late 1960s through the 1970s he became a fixture of German theater, collaborating with director Peter Stein at the Berlin Schaubühne and serving on its board, while simultaneously appearing in television productions such as the science‑fiction series Das Blaue Palais. His breakthrough on the big screen came with the 1975 German Film Award for Best Actor for John Glückstadt, and later roles in the politically charged The Lost Honour of Katharina Blum and the Oscar‑nominated The Glass Cell solidified his reputation as a versatile character actor. Laser achieved worldwide recognition in 2009 when he portrayed the chilling surgeon Dr. Josef Heiter in Tom Six’s horror film The Human Centipede (First Sequence), a performance that earned praise from critics including Roger Ebert, who called it the role he was “born for.” He reprised a variation of the character in the series’ final installment in 2015, demonstrating his willingness to embrace controversial material even amid creative disputes. Beyond horror, he continued to work in European cinema, appearing in The Ogre (1996), Conversation with the Beast (1996), and the Estonian fantasy Jesus’ Blood and Red Currants (2015). His stage work persisted into his later years, notably as the Hun king Etzel at the Nibelungen Festival and as the lawyer Huld in The Trial at Bad Hersfeld. Dieter Laser remained active until his death on 29 February 2020, twelve days after his 78th birthday, leaving behind a legacy of bold, often unsettling performances that challenged audiences across generations.
