Richard Henry Cogan, commonly known as Dick Cogan, was an American professional baseball player and manager born on December 5, 1871, in Paterson, New Jersey. Standing at 5 feet 7 inches tall and weighing 150 pounds, Cogan was a versatile athlete who played as both a pitcher and an outfielder during his career. He began his professional baseball journey in 1894 in the Virginia League, and then moved to the New York State League the following season. In 1896, he pitched an impressive 344 innings for the Atlantic League's Paterson Silk Weavers, posting a record of 21 wins against 21 losses with a stellar 2.27 earned run average. Cogan's major league debut came on May 10, 1897, with the Baltimore Orioles, although he only appeared in one game, surrendering three earned runs in two innings of work. He returned to the Atlantic League that same year with the Newark Colts, finishing the season with a strong 20-11 record. Cogan's brief stint in the majors was just the beginning of a much longer career in the minor leagues.

Cogan continued with the Colts in 1898 and 1899, displaying his versatility by playing in the outfield and at third base in addition to pitching. During the 1899 season, he achieved a 16-8 record on the mound while batting .306, demonstrating his offensive capabilities as well. That same year, he received his second opportunity in the National League with the Chicago Orphans, where he made five starts and posted a 2-3 record with a 4.30 ERA. Cogan remained in the majors in 1900, playing for the New York Giants, although he appeared in only two games for the team, with his final MLB appearance occurring on June 25, 1900. Despite his limited time at the highest level, his minor league performances showcased his talents as a multi-position player.

Following his major league career, Cogan returned to the minor leagues in 1901. In 1903, he took on the role of player-manager for the Eastern League's Providence Grays. He later organized the Hudson River League in 1904, serving as both player and manager for the circuit's Paterson Intruders club until 1907. Cogan also organized and managed a Negro team known as the Dick Cogan Smart Sets. He passed away on May 2, 1948, in his hometown of Paterson, New Jersey, at the age of 76, and was laid to rest at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Totowa, New Jersey. His legacy as both a player and a manager remains a notable part of early American baseball history.
