Denise Vernac (née Denise Yvonne Eveillard) was a French film actress born on 3 June 1916 in Les Pavillons-sous-Bois, a commune located in the eastern suburbs of Paris, France. She emerged as a notable presence in the French film industry during the late 1930s and continued her career through the mid-1960s. Vernac began her film career in 1939 with Immediate Call, a project that marked her debut on the silver screen and set the foundation for her work over the following decades. Throughout her career, she appeared in seventeen films, showcasing her versatility across a variety of genres ranging from drama to thriller. Some of her most recognized works include Paris-New York (1940), Love Cavalcade (1940), The Mask of Dijon (1946), The Dance of Death (1948), The Red Signal (1949), Mandragore (1952), Alraune (1952), Madonna of the Sleeping Cars (1955), and her final film Black Sun (1966). In addition to her acting career, Vernac was famously known as the devoted secretary and romantic companion of the Austrian-American actor, director, producer, and screenwriter Erich von Stroheim. Their relationship spanned nearly two decades, from 1939 until 1957, and was highlighted in a 1946 feature in Life magazine. Together, they had one son, Josef von Stroheim, who carried on his father's legacy. Vernac remained closely connected to von Stroheim's life and work, serving as both a personal confidante and a contributor to his professional endeavors. After years of dedicated service to the film industry, she passed away on 31 October 1984 in Paris, France, at the age of 68. She was laid to rest in the cemetery of Maurepas, Yvelines, where her memory continues to be honored. Her career, though modest in scale, represents an important chapter in the history of French cinema during the mid-twentieth century.
