David Van Cortlandt Crosby was an American singer, songwriter, and guitarist, who achieved fame as both a solo artist and as a member of prominent bands. Born on August 14, 1941, in Los Angeles, California, Crosby first found fame in the mid-1960s as a member of the Byrds. He helped pioneer the genres of folk rock and psychedelia, which had significant impacts on the music scene. In the 1970s, Crosby joined the supergroup Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young, contributing to the popularization of the 'California Sound.' Crosby was recognized for his outspoken personality and political views which often positioned him as a symbol of the counterculture of the 1960s. Crosby released eight solo albums, and his work with the Byrds and CSNY sold over 35 million albums. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice, once for his work in the Byrds and again for his work with CSN. Crosby died on January 18, 2023.

In addition to his musical career, David Crosby had a somewhat tumultuous personal life. He fathered four children and married Jan Dance in 1987. Crosby had a long history of substance abuse and legal issues. He served nine months in a Texas state prison after being convicted of several drug and weapons offences in 1985. His problems with alcohol and drug use eventually led to liver failure, and he received a liver transplant in 1994. Despite his health and legal struggles, Crosby continued to produce new music until his death in 2023.
