Dana Thomas Carvey, born on June 2, 1955 in Missoula, Montana, was the fourth of five children of Billie Dahl, a schoolteacher, and William John (Bud) Carvey, a high‑school business teacher. His family moved to Anderson, California in 1957 and later settled in San Carlos, where he attended Tierra Linda Junior High and Carlmont High School, excelling on the cross‑country team. He pursued higher education at the College of San Mateo before earning a bachelor's degree in broadcast communications from San Francisco State University. After winning the 1977 San Francisco Stand‑Up Comedy Competition, Carvey began appearing in small film roles, including a mime in This Is Spinal Tap (1984) and a part in Halloween II (1981). These early experiences honed his improvisational skills and prepared him for the breakthrough that would define his career. In 1986 he joined the cast of Saturday Night Live, where his sharp impressions and original characters such as the Church Lady and Hans quickly made him a household name, and his portrayal of Garth Algar—inspired by his brother Brad—remained a fan favorite. Carvey earned five consecutive Primetime Emmy nominations and won an Emmy in 1993 for Outstanding Individual Performance, cementing his status as one of the show’s most influential comedians. He left SNL in 1993 after seven seasons but returned for multiple hostings and cameo appearances, even revisiting the show in 2024 to impersonate President Joe Biden and entrepreneur Elon Musk.

Beyond SNL, Carvey starred in films like Moving (1988), Opportunity Knocks (1990), Trapped in Paradise (1994), and the Wayne’s World franchise, where his role as Garth Algar became iconic. He toured with successful HBO stand‑up specials, launched The Dana Carvey Show in 1996, and later focused on voice work in animated hits such as Hotel Transylvania 2 (2015) and The Secret Life of Pets series. In the 2010s he shifted toward podcasting, co‑hosting Fantastic! with Dana Carvey and later the Fly on the Wall podcast with David Spade. Carvey’s personal life includes his marriage to Paula Zwagerman in 1983, two sons—Dex and Thomas—and a dedication to family that led him to step back from the limelight during the 2000s.
