Candis Cayne, born August 29, 1971 in Maui, Hawaii, emerged from a unique educational background where her parents taught at a Waldorf School and the family lived on campus. After graduating from Henry Perrine Baldwin High School in 1989, she spent a formative year in Los Angeles training as a dancer before relocating to New York City in the early 1990s. There she quickly became a fixture in the underground club scene, performing at venues such as Boy Bar and the iconic Chelsea gay bar Tour. Her drag persona, Candis Cayne, captivated audiences and led to appearances at the legendary Wigstock festival, a milestone that solidified her reputation as a boundary‑pushing performance artist. In 1995 she broke into film with roles in the documentary Wigstock: The Movie, the comedy‑drama Stonewall, and the cult classic To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar, where she also contributed choreography. The following years saw her expanding her portfolio through independent projects like Mob Queen (1998) and winning the Miss Continental pageant in 2001, while continuing to advocate for visibility of transgender individuals in entertainment.

Cayne's breakthrough into mainstream television arrived in 2007 when she was cast as Carmelita Rainer on ABC’s prime‑time drama Dirty Sexy Money, marking the first time a transgender actress portrayed a recurring transgender character on a major network. Subsequent roles included the trans character Alexis Stone in Nip/Tuck and the enchanting Fairy Queen on Syfy’s The Magicians. Beyond acting, she served as a judge and Dean of Dance on RuPaul’s Drag U, mentored contestants with original choreography, and appeared in the documentary Disclosure: Trans Lives on Screen (2020). An outspoken activist, Cayne has partnered with GLAAD and served as global creative director for MOOVZ, consistently championing LGBTQ+ rights while insisting she simply wants to be seen as a happy, living human being.
