His impressive stature—standing 180 cm tall and weighing 74 kg—combined with his swift footwork, quickly caught the attention of VFL scouts, leading to his debut with Richmond in the 1914 season where he managed to kick two goals in just two appearances. After a brief hiatus caused by the First World War, Thorpe returned to the league, this time representing Fitzroy in 1918, adding three more goals over five games and demonstrating resilience despite the disruptions of wartime. Beyond his VFL tenure, Thorpe enjoyed a prolific career in the Victorian Football Association, turning out for several notable clubs including Footscray, Port Melbourne, Northcote, Prahran, and Camberwell, where his versatile playing style and experience made him a valuable asset on and off the field.
