In a quiet New Hampshire town, a young Rebecca Porter and, far away in New Mexico, a boy named Dylan Kershaw awaken to a strange connection: whatever the other experiences, the other feels, sees, and shares. When Rebecca crashes her sled and falls unconscious, Dylan is jolted from his desk and knocked out—an eerie, synchronized moment that hints at something extraordinary rather than mere coincidence.

Two decades later, Rebecca is married to the successful doctor Phillip, and Dylan has just been released from prison, trying to rebuild his life after years behind bars.

One night, Rebecca attends a fundraiser with Phillip, while Dylan, attempting to stay clean, spends time at a local bar. A chance hit from a pool cue sends a jolt through Dylan, and Rebecca collapses in a way she cannot explain, leaving her husband puzzled and anxious. The two feel the ripple of each other’s struggles as if their fates are tied to unseen threads.

From this point, the two discover that they can communicate by speaking aloud to hear one another, see through each other’s eyes, and feel what the other feels. They realize their connection isn’t a trick of the mind but a real, shared presence, and they begin to learn about each other—sharing dreams, memories, and even stepping in front of mirrors to meet face-to-face.

As their bond deepens, Becky realizes Dylan is in love with her, and she starts to feel something in return. Phillip notices Rebecca’s growing distance and unsettling behavior, while friends suspect an affair or a breakdown, and she is eventually institutionalized. Dylan, meanwhile, loses his job at a car wash as people misread his odd behavior and his conversations with Rebecca.

Driven by concern, Dylan violates his parole to reach New Hampshire and rescue Becky from the mental institution. Guided by their telepathic link, they navigate roads and barriers, Dylan stealing a truck to reach the airport and boarding a flight to New Hampshire. Becky, aided by the connection, slips past guards and car doors, using her own wits to help him while he fights to stay ahead of the authorities. They evade capture and push onward through the woods toward a train, climbing into an empty box car. There, at last, they meet in person for the first time and share a life-affirming kiss, a moment that seals their risky, impossible bond.
