Who Is Betty Fairfax?
Betty Fairfax was born in Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio in 1918. Credited on films since 1945, as an actor. The background, training and the roles that shaped the career.
Betty Harriet Fairfax was a pioneering American educator, counselor, and philanthropist whose career spanned several decades in the Phoenix, Arizona public school system. Born on July 31, 1918, in Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio, she was the second of four children born to Daniel Robert Fairfax Sr. and Inez Elizabeth Wood. She grew up alongside her siblings Florence, Jean Emily, and Daniel Robert Fairfax Jr., and pursued higher education with determination, earning a Bachelor of Science degree from Kent State University in 1940. Four years later, she completed her master's degree in education at Western University, and later undertook post-graduate studies at the prestigious Teachers College at Columbia University. Fairfax initially worked in the Cleveland public school district before being recruited by the Phoenix Union High School District, where she taught at the segregated Carver High School. When the schools eventually desegregated, she made history as one of the first Black teachers to integrate Phoenix Union High School, breaking significant racial barriers in the process. In 1969, she transitioned into a counseling role at Central High School in Phoenix, Arizona, eventually becoming the dean of students, a position she held from 1991 until 2006. Beyond her direct work in education, Fairfax co-founded the Dan and Betty Inez Fairfax Memorial Fund in 1985 alongside her sister Jean E. Fairfax, an organization aimed at expanding educational opportunities for African American and Latinx students. Her contributions to education and her community were widely recognized through numerous accolades, including the 2001 Tribute to Women Award from the YWCA in Maricopa County, induction into the Arizona Culture Keepers in 2004, and a State of Arizona Proclamation presented by Governor Janet Napolitano in 2007. In 2009, the Phoenix School District honored her legacy by naming a new high school the Betty H. Fairfax High School, which as of 2021 remained the only school in the district named for an educator. Posthumously, in 2020, Betty was inducted into the Arizona Women's Hall of Fame alongside her sister Jean Fairfax. She passed away on November 7, 2010, in Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona, leaving behind a profound and enduring legacy in American education.
