Archie Fisher, born Archie Macdonald Fisher on 23 October 1939 in Glasgow, Scotland, was a revered figure in the Scottish folk music tradition who dedicated over six decades to preserving and advancing the genre. Emerging from a remarkably musical family, Fisher was one of seven siblings, including his sisters Cilla Fisher and the late Ray Fisher, both accomplished professional singers who collaborated with him throughout his early career. After relocating to Edinburgh in 1960, he became a fixture at the legendary "The Howff" folk club, where he honed his distinctive gentle vocal style and intricate guitar work. His breakthrough came with the 1962 Topic Records single "Far Over the Forth" alongside Ray, followed by the 1966 familial collaboration The Fisher Family: Traditional & New Songs from Scotland. Fisher possessed a keen eye for talent, notably recognizing Barbara Dickson's vocal power in 1969 and featuring her on his albums, while his own compositions like "The Witch of the Westmorland" and "Dark-Eyed Molly" became staples of the folk repertoire, recorded by artists ranging from Stan Rogers to Fairport Convention and Eva Cassidy. His influence extended beyond performance into curation and production, most notably through his four-album collaboration with Irish folk legends Tommy Makem and Liam Clancy, producing their seminal works from 1976 to 1980 while serving as their guitarist and backup vocalist on international tours.

From 1983 until his retirement in April 2010, Fisher hosted the beloved BBC Radio Scotland program Travelling Folk, becoming an authoritative voice that guided listeners through traditional and contemporary folk landscapes for nearly three decades. His production credits and collaborations spanned continents and generations, including work with Tom Paxton, Garnet Rogers, and John Renbourn, while his later recordings such as Windward Away (2008) and A Silent Song (2015) demonstrated his enduring artistry well into his seventies. Throughout his career, Fisher maintained a distinctive approach to guitar accompaniment that emphasized intricate fingerpicking and harmonic sophistication, influencing generations of folk musicians. Despite his preference for acoustic instrumentation—eschewing electronic effects in favor of pure, unadorned sound—Fisher remained musically adventurous, even co-writing with contemporary acts like Frightened Rabbit. Appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2007 New Year Honours for services to Traditional Scottish Music, Fisher spent his final years in southern Scotland, leaving behind a legacy defined by poetic songwriting, masterful musicianship, and tireless advocacy for folk traditions until his death on 1 November 2025 at the age of 86.
