Andrew Berg, born Anders Berg on October 16, 1869 in the small farming community of Nykarleby, Finland, emigrated at sixteen to escape poverty and eventually became Alaska’s first licensed big‑game guide. After a circuitous journey through England, Canada and the Midwestern United States, he arrived in San Francisco and soon traveled to the Kenai Peninsula, where he worked at a salmon cannery and spent winters trapping and summers fishing for the Alaska Packers’ Association. His intimate knowledge of the rugged terrain and wildlife caught the attention of wealthy hunters such as Dall DeWeese, whose 1897 expedition marked the beginning of guided trophy hunting on the peninsula. Berg’s skillful guidance led to the harvest of dozens of Dall sheep, bears and moose, and his photographs of massive antlers were published in Field and Stream, cementing his reputation as a premier outdoorsman. Beyond guiding, Berg became an early advocate for wildlife conservation. He witnessed the rapid decline of caribou and moose populations, prompting DeWeese to write to President Theodore Roosevelt in 1901 for regulatory reform. When Alaska instituted game‑wardenship, bag limits and licensing in 1908, Berg received license No. 1 and held it for more than two decades. He served as a game warden (1920‑1921) and later worked for the United States Fish and Wildlife Service until 1936, helping to shape early Alaskan wildlife policy. Berg also constructed eleven log cabins across the Kenai Peninsula, including the historic 1902 Tustumena Lake cabin now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Great Depression forced his retirement from guiding in 1929, and after a decade of chronic heart and kidney illness he died in Anchorage on March 1, 1939. His legacy endures in Alaska’s hunting culture, conservation history, and the preserved cabins that bear his name.
