Born on July 7, 1968 in Elmhurst, Illinois, she grew up in the nearby suburb of Glen Ellyn as the daughter of schoolteacher Barbara Jane Hultman and Robert Eugene Carlson, and she proudly traces her heritage to Swedish ancestors from Småland.
