Who Is Alexa von Porembsky?

Alexa von Porembsky was born in Sopron, Austria-Hungary in 1906. Credited on films since 1937, as an actor. The background, training and the roles that shaped the career.

Alexa von Porembsky (5 June 1906 – 18 August 1981) was a Hungarian-born German actress whose career spanned more than three decades during one of the most transformative eras in European cinema. Born in Sopron, then part of Austria-Hungary but now belonging to Hungary, she emerged as one of the notable performers of the Weimar Republic and continued working steadily into the post-war German film industry. Her career began in the silent film era with her appearance in Leontine's Husbands (1928), and she soon appeared in Fritz Lang's groundbreaking science fiction classic Woman in the Moon (1929), where she played the role of Eine Veilchenverkäuferin. This early collaboration with one of cinema's most visionary directors helped establish her presence in the German film industry during a period when the country's cinema was leading the world in artistic and technical innovation.

Throughout the 1930s, von Porembsky became a familiar face in German cinema, taking on supporting roles in numerous productions. Her filmography during this decade included appearances in films such as The Tsar's Diamond (1932), where she portrayed Prinzessin Eudoxia, and The Cheeky Devil (1932), in which she played Annette. She also appeared in Woman's Love—Woman's Suffering (1937) as Frieda, Zimmermädchen, and The Model Husband (1937) as Mary. Her performances during this period often featured her playing maids, servants, and working-class women, reflecting the social dynamics prevalent in the films of that era.

The outbreak of World War II and the subsequent division of Germany did not halt her career, as she continued to perform throughout the 1940s and into the 1950s. After the war, she appeared in films such as Don't Play with Love (1949), Der Posaunist (1949), and At the Well in Front of the Gate (1952) as Gerti - Kellnerin. Her final film role came in Kohlhiesels Töchter (1962), after which she appears to have retired from the screen. Von Porembsky passed away on 18 August 1981 in West Berlin, West Germany, at the age of 75, leaving behind a legacy of more than 60 film appearances that chronicled the evolution of German cinema from its silent era beginnings through the post-war Wirtschaftswunder.
