Kohlhiesel’s Daughters 1962

After studying hotel management in Munich, Liesel returns to her hometown, Hinterflüh, where her father, Vater Kohlhiesel, and her twin sister, Susi Kohlhiesel, run the family inn. The past lingers in the air as her former boyfriend, Toni, hopes to rekindle what they once shared, yet time apart has cooled their bond. An acquaintance from Munich, Günter, follows Liesel to the inn, takes a job there, and quietly pursues her. Liesel feels drawn to Günter, who is educated and well-mannered, while Susi favors Toni, a wealthy and hands-on farmer. Yet Toni is not publicly drawn to Susi, largely because of her ghastly appearance and rude demeanor.

Both men soon learn of the twins’ mother’s dying wish—that Susi should be married off first—a family edict the Kohlhiesels take very seriously. [Günter] has a scheme in mind and uses his influence to steer events: he talks Toni into marrying Susi, not out of love but to ensure the marriage fails and dissolves. The plan is meant to satisfy the late mother’s wish while clearing the path for Toni to marry Liesel later on. The plan sets the stage for a curious chain of events that will test loyalties and feelings.

The wedding day arrives, and Toni drinks too much, missing the wedding night. The following morning, he picks a fight with Susi, who turns to her sister for help. In a bold move, Liesel helps by changing Susi’s attire and hairdo to resemble her own appearance, and she offers practical advice on housekeeping and presentation. Toni is genuinely surprised by the transformation and finds himself drawn to Susi in a way he hadn’t anticipated, as if the veil of pretenses begins to lift.

As the emotional dust settles, Toni’s lingering sense of obligation to Liesel remains. He pleads with Günter to marry Liesel instead, and Günter agrees, setting in motion a twist of fate that pushes everyone toward an uncertain, intertwined future.
