Alastair David William Fothergill, OBE, is a prolific and esteemed British producer of nature documentaries for television and cinema. Born on 10, April 1960, Fothergill has contributed significantly to the field of natural history programming. He kick-started his career with the BBC Natural History Unit in 1983 and worked on renowned productions including 'The Really Wild Show,' 'Wildlife on One' and David Attenborough's 'The Trials of Life.' In 1992, he became the head of the BBC Natural History Unit, demonstrating his exceptional leadership skills and deep understanding of the genre. His most notable work as the head of the unit includes Attenborough's award-winning series 'Life in the Freezer.' Furthermore, Fothergill's accolades include being awarded the Royal Geographical Society's Cherry Kearton Medal and Award in 1996.

In June 1998, Fothergill stepped down as the head of the Natural History Unit to focus on his role as series producer on the multi-award-winning 'The Blue Planet.' His other significant works include 'Planet Earth' (2006), 'Frozen Planet' (2011), and 'The Hunt' (2015). He also co-directed the feature films 'Deep Blue' and 'Earth' and was associated with Disneynature, under which he directed several nature documentaries. In 2016, he was made a Fellow of the Royal Television Society for his significant contributions to natural history programming and was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2019 for his services to film.
