Andrea, Virginia Madsen, is a teenage girl who has won a scholarship to Ettinger, a boarding school that used to be all-male. She leaves behind her boyfriend Barry, James Wilder, in the hope of scholastic achievement, but soon discovers that something is not right at Ettinger.
Behind the polished hallways, she finds that friends are slowly becoming faceless drones who blend into the coursework and conform to the rules with eerie precision. An investigation reveals a chilling truth: the school’s faculty has been harvesting life-sustaining chemicals from the student body, crafting pupils who appear perfect—bright, well-behaved, and relentlessly focused on achievement.
Among the staff, one figure stands out as a potential ally. Philo, Richard Cox, a professor, takes pity on Andrea because she bears a striking resemblance to a former lover. As she teams up with her boyfriend to uncover what’s really happening, they stumble upon a disturbing mechanism behind the calm, high-achieving atmosphere: the staff use classical music to stabilize the students and keep them in line.
Philo explains a plan, handing Andrea a tape to play over the loudspeaker system. He claims that this recording will halt the faculty’s grip and keep her from being captured and turned into a zombie. But the moment comes when she is chased by the very students she hoped to help, and she ends up losing the tape.
With nothing left to lose, Barry steps up and switches to a rock music tape in place of the one Philo gave her. The rock-driven disruption disrupts the control that binds the students, effectively stopping the danger and saving Andrea and her ally from a grim fate. The film plays out as a tense battle between conformity and freedom, using music as the key to breaking a chilling cycle and restoring a sense of agency for those who dared to question Ettinger’s pristine facade.
