ZOMBIE DRIFTWOOD opens with a clearly defined dynamic: Gordon Brian Braggs is a heavy metal devotee whose life revolves around chasing every October File gig. He is dating a bright medical college student named Jackie Rita Estevanovich, but Jackie is growing tired of Gordon’s relentless obsession and the endless string of gigs. To mend things, Gordon quietly arranges a Caribbean cruise, hoping a change of scenery will soften the rift. The plan includes meeting two friends, Mannie and Marianne, for a short break in the Cayman Islands, all set against a flood of news reports about a cruise ship that vanished in the Bermuda Triangle.

On Grand Cayman, the pair steer toward the Driftwood, a beachside bar run by Dan Peter Kosa, a man who shares a love of metal and takes pride in a quirky, valuable rock-memorabilia collection that doubles as decor. The bar’s quiet atmosphere is punctured by constant TV chatter about the missing vessel, as Dan tends to his lone customer, Teddy, who nuzzles into a stupor of alcohol. The local chatter dips in and out of the bar, while a TV newsroom buzz swirls in the background, anchoring the unfolding chaos with familiar images of the ship’s disappearance.

The local narrative widens when a television anchor, Gwen, and a weatherman, Ron, extend their off-screen relationship into a secret Friday tryst at a cottage near the Driftwood. Their personal drama mirrors the island’s escalating tension, even as the couples head for the Driftwood, their car blasting heavy metal that drowns out the sea breeze and the island’s softer sounds.

Dan is joined by Tom Colin G. Wilson, a rough-edged local news reporter who has a complicated past with the bar and the people who inhabit it. He uses the cruise-ship story to fuel his own narrative, while Dan contends with a painful divorce and the bar’s precarious finances. To Dan’s surprise, Tom reveals that the deserted cruise ship has washed ashore just outside the bar, turning the Driftwood into a nexus of rumor and speculation.

As the night thickens, a Royal Cayman Islands police officer named Chisolm passes through, giving the youngsters a brisk lesson in safe driving with a speeding ticket and a caution that might someday save their lives. A TV news crew arrives, intensifying the bar’s already sharp atmosphere. The crew’s arrival coincides with a moment of personal revelation when Jackie learns that October File will indeed perform that very night. Gordon’s plan to surprise Jackie with the cruise’s hidden purpose becomes clear: the trip is really a cover for another concert, and the band’s presence raises the tension in the cramped space.

The drift of events accelerates when the band takes the stage and the bar fills with energy. TV reporter Tammie, played by Tammie (in the film’s cast sense, portrayed by Olivia Scott Ramirez), arrives with a complicated history with Tom, hinting at past infidelities as she moves through the room. Inside the bar, Mannie and Marianne step outside for a private moment of affection, only to be attacked and killed by zombie cruise-ship passengers who have somehow returned as undead silhouettes of their former selves.

The assault ripples through the Driftwood: the band is overwhelmed and killed, and a stunned crowd—Dan, Teddy, Tom, Colin, and Jackie—watches as the chaos erupts. Dan tries to maintain control, insisting that the hurricane-proof glass will keep the zombies at bay, but a sudden smash shatters that illusion when the Ladies’ Room window yields the first gruesome glimpse of what lies outside. The remains of Tammie are discovered, a sobering reminder that danger has come to the Driftwood.

The group quickly discovers an unsettling clue: the zombies’ brains seem to be imprinted with their last behavior patterns, almost like a lingering “tourist” mindset. The undead move with a strange, almost banal purpose, seeking out objects that fit their last impulses. They attempt to buy souvenirs, leveraging money and a desire for memorabilia. Jackie realizes that the zombies’ cravings are oddly consumerist; she cleverly trades Dan’s T-shirt collection to appease them, a small moment of quiet cunning amid the nightmare. Dan, though mortified by the loss, is oddly relieved to have turned a dangerous rush into something marketable.

With the souvenir trade finished, the zombies turn more aggressive, forcing Gordon and Teddy into action. The two fray against the rising tide of undead, managing to close a window and buy the group more time. The tension spikes as Colin is bitten, a grim reminder of the real danger that lurks in the shadows.

Across the island, life flickers back to the cottage. Ron and Gwen, still alive but under siege, must break their handcuffs if they hope to reach relative safety. Their bid for escape leads them to the Driftwood’s doorway, but their attempt ends with another brutal turn toward the undead as their bond is severed and they become part of the growing zombie throng.

Gordon makes a dramatic rescue, pulling Jackie from the grip of a now-zombified Tom. The night deepens and the RCIP’s stance shifts: no zombies are to be killed outright, but rather detained until the government determines their status. Officers Chisolm and Webb, under orders from the Superintendent, command the arrest of the remaining zombies and the temporary release of the Driftwood from the undead siege.

As night lengthens, Dan discovers zombies smoking outside the bar and decides to take a hard line to protect his license and livelihood. Then a new, almost absurd twist arrives: heavy metal music roars to life as Adolf Hitler reappears to host a zombie talent show called Z Factor. In this moment, October File has been transformed into zombies and is forced to perform one last full-volume gig for the night.

When the show ends, the zombies surge again, seemingly ready to overwhelm the survivors. Jackie steps forward, offering the last of the bar’s booze to quiet the mob, a risky move that fails to calm the crowd until Teddy re-enters with his bagpipes. The high-pitched drones clash with the zombies’ memory loops, and the creatures recoil, allowing Dan, Jackie, and Gordon to slip away into the kitchen.

Dawn arrives with a pounding knock on the Driftwood’s door. The living are almost certain to be overwhelmed, but PC Chisholm returns to the scene, delivering decisive action: the remaining zombies are arrested, and the Driftwood’s nightmarish encounter begins to clear, leaving the survivors to reckon with the strange carnivalesque nightmare they endured.

In the end, the film blends dark humor with a claustrophobic dread as a tropical paradise becomes a theater of the undead.
