Ioya is a character who appears in a coming-of-age story centered on Sakamichi Onoda, a shy first-year student who just entered high school. Onoda is an otaku with a passion for anime and a deep love for cycling as a hobby. He hopes that joining the school’s anime club will help him connect with others who share his interests. However, he faces disappointment when he learns the anime club has been disbanded due to a lack of interest, and his dream hinges on recruiting new members to revive it.
Since childhood, Onoda has ridden a bulky city bike, known in Japan as a mamachari, more for practical travel than for sport or speed. The arrival of a fellow freshman, a serious cyclist named Shunsuke Imaizumi, changes his outlook. Imaizumi ridicules Onoda inwardly at first, though his tough exterior softens when he sees Onoda tackle a steep hill on the mamachari with surprising ease.
Another student named Naruko is seen visiting Akihabara to buy plastic Gundam models for his younger brothers, and his path crosses Onoda’s. Naruko is drawn to Onoda’s unusual cycling skills on the everyday mamachari, recognizing a kind of persistence that could translate well to racing.
With this growing interest, both Naruko and Imaizumi begin to encourage Onoda to try out the bicycle racing club at Sohoku High School. They see the potential to channel Onoda’s loyalty and tenacity into a team sport that values endurance, strategy, and teamwork. The prospect of joining Sohoku promises adventures on the road, new rivals, and a chance to transform a hobby into a real sport.
Throughout the narrative, the bicycle and the hills become the stage where friendships form, rivalries spark, and a shy freshman learns to push beyond his comfort zone. The story threads together the quiet exhilaration of long rides, the social dynamics of high school clubs, and the slow, steady building of a team that could one day compete in bigger races.
