Sarah Winchester, portrayed by the talented Helen Mirren, is a woman enveloped in tragedy following the unexpected deaths of her husband, William Wirt Winchester, and their young daughter, Annie. Inheriting a staggering $20 million and a significant share in the Winchester firearm company, Sarah becomes convinced she is haunted by the spirits of those who fell victim to the firearms manufactured by her late husband.

In a desperate bid to escape the torment of her loss, she consults a medium and ultimately relocates to San Jose, California. There, she purchases an eight-room house, which she gradually converts over the next two decades into an expansive, enigmatic mansion known as the Winchester Mystery House. This architectural marvel, now a sprawling seven-story labyrinth, is notorious for its lack of a master plan, featuring an intricate maze of halls that confound even the most seasoned visitors. As time progresses, Sarah’s reclusiveness deepens, mirroring the complexities of her sprawling estate.

At the mansion, her relative, Marion Marriott, lives alongside her son, Henry, portrayed by Finn Scicluna-O’Prey. Henry becomes the unwitting target of a dark force that infiltrates the household, leading him to claim that “he is coming for us,” a phrase that sends chills down Sarah’s spine as it hints at the danger lurking in the shadows of their home.

In the year 1906, the Winchester company’s Board of Directors grow increasingly concerned about Sarah’s mental health and hire Dr. Eric Price to evaluate her stability. Given his own financial difficulties stemming from mounting debts and personal loss, Eric reluctantly accepts the position despite knowing that his mission is to assess Sarah’s fitness for managing the company. Unfortunately, his own struggles with grief, particularly regarding the death of his wife, Ruby, played by Laura Brent, lead him into a spiral of drug use, from which he must navigate throughout his assessment.

As he arrives at the mansion, a peculiar occurrence occurs—Eric experiences ghostly visions that he initially attributes to his medication. Soon, he witnesses a desperate moment when Henry, seemingly possessed, leaps from a height, needing rescue. Through these chilling experiences, he engages Sarah in deep conversations about the impact of their company’s products and discovers that her views on their firearms are surprisingly unflattering, reflecting her guilt and obsession with the spirits of those lost to her husband’s legacy.

The mansion itself is filled with intricate details, including a grand ballroom constructed without the use of nails, and an astonishing 100 rooms in total, each built in a chaotic manner reflective of Sarah’s haunted psyche. Sarah reveals her profound fear of the ghosts that inhabit the estate and expresses her belief that she can help them find peace. During a revealing night, Sarah suddenly becomes possessed and sketches plans for a new room, showcasing the overwhelming influence these spirits have on her life.

As the story unfolds, it is revealed that Eric himself has ties to a Winchester rifle, having been shot and miraculously revived, which enhances his connection to the spectral residents. Sarah articulates her understanding that the spirits guide her in constructing rooms that embody their past lives, offering them a setting to fulfill their unfinished earthly duties. With spirits contained through a unique method of sealing them with thirteen nails, her intention is to ensure their peace, yet she increasingly senses a malevolent presence in her family’s midst.

Tension escalates as Henry, under the influence of a malicious spirit, attempts to harm Sarah. With the help of Marion, Eric manages to confront the ghost, identifying it as Benjamin Block, a Confederate soldier haunted by the losses suffered at the hands of Winchester rifles. The narrative soon intertwines with the catastrophic events of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, further complicating the already chaotic household dynamics.

Guided by the ghost of his late wife, Ruby, Eric finds renewed purpose in helping Sarah confront the dangers besieging their family. They unite, working together to entrap Ben, whose fury and malicious intent become evident during the turmoil. Realizations about the power that Eric’s experience with his own death provides come into play, and he triumphs by utilizing the bullet he retained—ultimately vanquishing the ghostly threat and restoring normalcy for Henry and Marion.

In the aftermath of these haunting events, Sarah is deemed mentally fit to retain control of her legacy, expressing her intentions to continue creating rooms to address the needs of other spirits seeking closure. However, even as repairs are made to the Winchester mansion, a single nail falls from a board sealed against a spirit, ominously suggesting that the legacy of the Winchester Mystery House as one of the most haunted places in North America persists.
