On Saturday, 5 April 1941, one day before the Axis invasion of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, a colorful and ragged group of passengers on a country road deep in the heart of Serbia climbs aboard a dilapidated bus destined for Belgrade. The lineup is as varied as it is curious: two Romani musicians, Miodrag Kostić as Muzikant I and Nenad Kostić as Muzikant II, a World War I veteran, a Germanophile geologist, a budding singer, a sickly-looking man, and a hunter with a shotgun. The bus is owned by Krstić Sr., and it is driven by his impressionable and somewhat dim-witted son Miško Krstić Aleksandar Berček, a man whose future seems as uncertain as the road ahead.
