Brian O’Connell, son of a Saskatchewan pharmacist during the Depression, dislikes school because of a nervous teacher and spends time hunting gophers with Artie and Forbsie. His older friend Jonathan “The Young Ben” is shunned for his father’s drunken ways. When his parents leave and he stays on Uncle Sean’s farm, the experience broadens his outlook.
