Spoilers ahead
Max Baron is a twenty-seven-year-old St. Louis advertising executive who has retreated from life in the two years since the car accident that killed his wife Janey. He drifts through work and social routines with a guarded, almost invisible presence, haunted by loss. On his way to his friend Neil’s bachelor party, he stops for food at a White Palace diner and orders fifty burgers. When six are missing, he returns to the restaurant to complain, sparking a tense exchange with the middle‑aged waitress, Nora Baker. She refunds him and sends him back to the party, but the encounter leaves him unsettled. At a bar later, he encounters Nora again; she is clearly drawn to him, though she jokes and flirts while he remains defensive and distant.
