Wendy Wu Brenda Song is a popular Chinese-American teenager whose world is suddenly upended by a visit from Shen Shin Koyamada, a young Buddhist monk. He insists that Wendy is the reincarnation of a mighty female warrior and the only person who can stop an ancient evil spirit from destroying the world. To help, he asks her to wear a powerful amulet that will shield her from danger until he can complete her martial-arts training.
Wendy’s attention is pulled in two directions at once: the High School political arena and a looming battle against Yan-Lo, the malevolent force bent on chaos. She’s more focused on Homecoming Queen ambitions than on destiny, especially since her school rival Jessica Dawson is in the running. The drama at home echoes the tension at school: her beloved grandmother believes Shen’s tale, while her mother—an observant researcher at the Fair Springs National History Museum—begins to reconnect with their Chinese heritage, inspired by Shen’s cultural lessons; and her father is touched by Shen’s mooncakes, which seem to unlock a little family history as well. All the while, the threat grows closer.
At the museum, Yan-Lo’s dark powers start to spread, possessing a string of ordinary people to reach Wendy. The invader takes control of a security guard at the museum, Wendy’s brother, her dog, and even her principal and teachers, turning them into threats she must face. Wendy’s closest circle trembles as her best friend Tory and the other girl she’s always been up against, Lisa, are pulled into the danger, while she also navigates a breakup with her boyfriend Austin. The strain pushes her to lean harder on Shen and to deepen her bond with him as the pressure to save everyone mounts.
As Wendy’s training begins, the science of Chinese martial arts comes to life through the souls of the Five Animals that inhabit her instructors: the Tiger, the Snake, the Crane, the Leopard, and the Dragon. In this transformation arc, Mr. Medina James Gaylyn becomes the Tiger, Coach Gibbs Sally Stockwell becomes the Snake, Mr. Tobias Timothy Raby becomes the Crane, Mr. Garibay Michael Saccente becomes the Leopard, and Shen himself becomes the Dragon. With these animal mentors, Wendy learns to channel discipline, focus, and courage she didn’t know she had.
The story crescendos when Wendy earns her rightful distinction as Homecoming Queen, only to discover that the battle will take place on the very night of the Homecoming Dance. Doubt and a sense of betrayal flash through her as she considers stepping away from destiny, but her grandmother’s insistence and Shen’s unyielding faith push her to reconsider. She learns that Shen has gone into the fray alone, and she and the monks race to his aid just in time. The final confrontation with Yan-Lo tests every skill Wendy has learned, and her inner strength bursts into full bloom as she fuses her training with her own resolve to protect those she loves.
In the climactic showdown, Wendy and Shen confront Yan-Lo in a moment that binds fate to choice. Shen’s selfless act seems to seal his fate, but Wendy defies the prophecy by altering his destiny, allowing them both to stand against the evil together. The monks ascend, leaving the couple with a new path forward. The battle ends with Yan-Lo finally defeated, and the once-divided friends and family beginning to heal. As the dust settles, Wendy and Shen share a quiet moment and head off for cappuccinos and chocolate, a simple pleasure that hints at a possible future together.
