In a sun-drenched 1972 Los Angeles suburb, Barbi finds herself living what seems like a comfortable, conventional life with her husband Rick. Their days are shadowed by the easy flirtations of Sheila and her husband Mark, an actor who often crosses lines with Barbi. When Barbi suffers sexual harassment at work, she quits, and Rick urges her to become a homemaker, a change that gradually strains their relationship as he travels frequently for business. The distance and friction grow until Rick spends a month away, and Barbi begins to question the vows she once took. Sheila confides that Mark has left her as well, and the two women decide to embrace a single life for a time.

This sense of independence leads them into a world far more permissive and glamorous than Barbi’s former routine. Dressed in daring outfits, they are approached by a madam who offers to arrange sexual encounters and dates. Barbi adopts the alias Viva, a name inspired by an erotic magazine she enjoys, marking the start of a new chapter that will test her boundaries and desires. Viva moves through a sequence of arranged meetings, each encounter nudging her further from the safe, familiar script of married life.

On one of these journeys, Viva meets Clyde, a photographer drawn to her presence and allure. She refuses to rush into intimacy, insisting on waiting until she feels ready. Yet a provocative performance at an orgy leads Clyde to drug her, and the encounter becomes something she did not consent to in the way she had hoped. The aftermath leaves Viva unsettled, and she seeks counsel from Sheila. In a turning point, Sheila reveals she is returning to Mark after discovering she is pregnant, and urges Viva to consider reuniting with Rick as well, suggesting that the old life might still have room for reconciliation.

Before Viva can decide, a violent moment interrupts the plan. Mark launches a brutal assault, attempting to rape Barbi. Rick arrives just in time, catching the scent of Mark’s cologne and confronting the threat. The confrontation ends with Mark fleeing, leaving Rick with a broken leg, but the moment also rekindles the bond between Barbi and her husband. The reunion is complicated by the facts that Sheila and Mark have a baby, and yet the two couples find themselves awkwardly still connected as friends.

The story then pivots toward opportunity and art. Barbi receives a phone call from Arthur, a musical producer who is a friend of Clyde, offering her a role in an upcoming show. At an audition, Barbi and Sheila share a performance that centers on the many facets of womanhood, turning their personal experiences into a chorus of voices on stage.

Through these intertwined episodes, the women navigate the push and pull between independence and partnership, experimenting with identity, desire, and the challenges of staying true to themselves while maintaining the bonds that once defined their lives. The film closes not with a simple verdict, but with a sense of possibility as Barbi and Sheila step into a musical number that celebrates variety, strength, and the enduring complexity of womanhood.
