What Is Virgin Margarida About?
The premise of Virgin Margarida without spoilers.
In 1975, as Mozambique gained independence, a revolutionary movement sought to cleanse the streets of Maputo. Prostitutes were sent to remote re-education camps with the aim of transforming them into loyal citizens. Among those mistakenly taken is Margarida, a sixteen-year-old girl from the countryside. Inspired by the experiences of real women, the film portrays a little-known and challenging period in Mozambique’s history, one that suppressed individuality and reinforced male dominance.
