Janet Belhmer Emmanuelle Béart and Paul Belhmer Rufus Sewell are a wealthy couple who bear the heavy weight of losing their son, Joshua, in the Boxing Day tsunami of 2004. This tragedy shadows their lives, shaping their emotions and decisions as they navigate grief, memory, and the limits of longing for closure. Six months after the disaster, and after a stay in Thailand, they attend a screening at an orphanage fundraiser organized by Kimberly Park, a film that centers on the Moken and Salone communities in the South Tanintharyi division, a region that sits in a restricted zone. The danger and allure of the area lie in its seclusion, accessible only by boats connected to a triad led by Thaksin Gao Petch Osathanugrah, a man whose military ties are rumored to underpin the smuggling networks that move people to bars in Myanmar.

Janet Belhmer experiences a jolt of hope as she catches sight of a distant figure she believes might be Joshua, a sign that she clings to despite the odds. Her intuition unsettles Paul, who—driven by a mix of doubt and desperation—gives in to pursuing contact with the triad’s leader and arranging passage on one of Gao’s boats for a steep, one‑time fee. Their journey begins with a misleading stop at a false decoy in the Mergui Archipelago, a place where male orphans remain visible while female presence is conspicuously absent, and where locals cast balloons at night in an effort to ward off vinyan spirits. The couple’s sense of direction falters as they are guided, through a series of deceptive map markings, toward a more precarious destination.

As resources dwindle and their hope wanes, they are led to a remote, uninhabited island south of Macleod Island (west of Zadetkale Island), a place that promises shelter yet delivers further disorientation. The landscape becomes a labyrinth of uncertainty, placing Janet and Paul in a perilous, isolating region where they confront not only the perils of the route but also the emotional terrain of grief, guilt, and the possibility that Joshua’s presence may never become a tangible reality.
