In a remote village near Palani named Kanakkanpatti, a poor goat herder named Marimuthu struggles with a difficult history: he lost his formal education when his father passed away when he was just 13, and he now works on a farm, able to stay at home only during holidays. Yet he channels his energy into kabaddi, showcasing impressive skill and a quiet, steady determination that keeps his dreams alive. He shares this dream with a tight-knit group of childhood friends—Ayyappan, Sekar, Murthy, Appukutty, Subramani, and Pandi—who form the local team, Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu, a squad infamous for never having won a match.

The team dynamics are colorful and imperfect. Sekar, a rich yet hot-tempered man, is the always-present captain. Appukutty runs a small tea shop and endures frequent scoldings from his mother-in-law, while Subramani is a newlywed who juggles a few simple pleasures: eating, kabaddi, and love. Pandi owns a local store and is the son of an ex-army man. Despite their flaws and quirks, they cling to the hope that perseverance on the court might translate into a better life for all of them. In a subplot, Marimuthu meets a striking young woman during the village’s annual festival, and their budding attraction becomes intertwined with the team’s fortunes as they set up a friendly kabaddi match against a neighboring village. The visit of Savadamuthu, the coach of the state’s top kabaddi team, adds pressure and prestige to the occasion, as he presents a vision of competing at a higher level in a state-level pre-qualified tournament that seems to bar local teams from participation. When the district team unexpectedly forfeits its slot, the Vennila squad steps in as the Dindigul district team, seizing a rare opportunity.

Internal chaos follows as Savadamuthu contemplates inserting a rookie from the Paper Mills team into the lineup, hoping to shake things up. The rest of the squad resists this move, and Savadamuthu is expelled from coaching the team. In a surprising turn, he separates from his celebrated state-winning team and redirects his focus to coaching Vennila, bringing a disciplined, hard-edged approach to their practice and progression. Under his stern leadership, the team advances through the tournament, overcoming a string of obstacles and disadvantages to reach the final.

The semifinal presents a brutal test: the opposing team targets Marimuthu, injuring him severely enough to dislocate his collarbone and force hospitalization. Yet the remaining players rally, delivering a crushing victory that foreshadows their potential in the final. The much-anticipated final pairs Vennila against the defending champions, Paper Mills. The match carries enormous stakes and tense betting chatter from a local bookie who fears Vennila’s ascent. A conspiratorial push seeks to keep Marimuthu out; Sekar is manipulated by the plan, but the coach and the rest of the team stand firm, and Sekar is expelled from the lineup before the whistle.

When the final unfolds, Vennila finds themselves tested but resilient. The game shifts back and forth, ending in a tie, and a tiebreaker is required. One by one, players from both sides step forward for the decisive moments, until Marimuthu is tasked with the decisive defense. In a dramatic last-raids moment, the opposing raider attempts a light kick to create space and scoring opportunity, but Marimuthu steps forward, halts the attack, and both players tumble. The clock runs out before a successful touching of the line, and Marimuthu’s defense clinches the victory for Vennila. Thus, the underdog team becomes the first rookie champions of the state.

Months pass, and Marimuthu’s love interest returns to the festival where their paths first crossed. Yet he is missing, and it is eventually revealed that he died when his heart stopped after the chest contact that occurred during the final raid. Out of care and loyalty, his friends choose not to reveal the truth to spare the woman who loved him the pain of his loss. The film closes on an unresolved note: the woman departs the village with her memory of him, while Marimuthu’s mother continues to endure the ache of losing her son.
