Spoilers ahead
Chayley Broadbent has had the importance of frugality hammered into him by his Yorkshire father. On his father’s death, Chayley inherits £62,000, including the clothing factory in Barfield. He asks his girlfriend Ethel to marry him, but he is extremely unromantic, telling her it’s to save money on his housekeeper. She accepts.
Chayley leaves Barfield for the first time in his life to visit London for the FA Cup Final. After the match he attends a West End show and is pulled on stage by showgirl Ruthine West. They go to dinner in a posh restaurant, where his penny-pinching mentality leads him to question the bill, embarrassing Ruthine. Back in Yorkshire, Chayley shows Ethel a photo of Ruthine. She angrily tears it up.
