Bart, a vicious loan shark Bob Hoskins residing in Glasgow, uses his bodyguard, Danny Jet Li, to attack debtors who miss payments. Bart has trained Danny to be an attack dog, relying on a metal collar around Danny’s neck to keep him under control. Yet the collar’s grip begins to fail as Danny grows more aware of the world beyond orders, revealing the limitations of even the harsh system that shaped him.

A crime boss lures Bart into an underground fighting ring that stages deadly matches, with hefty prize money awarded each month if Danny can survive. Danny easily wins the first bout, but Bart’s fortunes take a turn when a confrontation with another mobster leaves Bart badly wounded and presumed dead. Danny survives the ordeal, escaping to an antiques warehouse where he collapses from exhaustion. There, Sam, a blind piano tuner Morgan Freeman, discovers him and carries him to safety at his home. Sam’s stepdaughter, Victoria, helps nurse Danny back to health as he begins to recover not just physically but emotionally.

Under the care of Sam and Victoria, Danny gradually learns to shed the violence that defined him. He loosens the grip of the collar, especially after Victoria removes it, and starts to show genuine curiosity about the world—most notably a growing attraction to music and a slow reconstruction of memories about his mother. This new path marks a clear shift from the creature built for fearsome displays to a being capable of choice and tenderness, supported by the kindness of his rescuers.

Weeks pass, and Sam tells Danny that they are considering a move back to New York, where Sam and Victoria originally come from. He invites Danny to join them, telling him that they think of him as family, a gesture that fills Danny with cautious hope. But when Danny is out shopping alone, he encounters Lefty, Bart’s right-hand man, who reveals that Bart has survived. Lefty drags Danny back to Bart, who demands to know what Danny may remember about his past, including his mother. Bart denies ever knowing her and returns Danny to the underground ring for the next fight. Danny faces four opponents at first, overwhelmed but eventually overcomes them, choosing not to kill. Enraged, Bart drags Danny back to their compound and locks him in a cell, where the decision to break free confronts him.

Danny escapes the confinement, and in a quiet moment of search, he studies Bart’s old photographs and finds an image of a person who resembles his mother. Bart insists that his mother was a prostitute who disappeared after abandoning her son, a claim that only deepens Danny’s confusion and resolve. He escapes again and seeks out Sam and Victoria, and with their support he pieces together the truth of his past: his mother was a Glasgow music student who offered herself to Bart to secure funds, hiding young Danny away in a closet; Bart killed her when she defied him, and Bart has raised Danny ever since.

The pursuit resumes as Bart and a gang reach Sam’s apartment complex to seize Danny. To protect Sam and Victoria, Danny hides them in a closet and steps out to confront the attackers. He faces Bart, who tries to plead with him to return to the old life, but Danny refuses and delivers a furious beating. Sam and Victoria burst out, begging Danny not to kill; Bart taunts him, pressing every button he can. In a final act of defense, Sam hurls a flowerpot at Bart’s head, knocking him unconscious, and the three of them embrace in relief.

Sometime later, Danny stands at a piano recital with Sam at Carnegie Hall, while Victoria sits at the piano and begins to play the same song that accompanied Danny’s earliest memories. The moment earns a quiet, hopeful smile from Danny, a sign that healing and memory have finally found their place in his life.
