Jerry Ryan Robert Mitchum is a lawyer from Nebraska who has recently separated from his wife, Tess, and moved into a shabby apartment in New York City. He wrestles with the unfinished divorce, which is still being finalized, and he spends long nights walking the neon-lit streets as a way to think things over.
At a party, he meets Gittel Moscawitz, Shirley MacLaine, a struggling dancer. They instantly click and begin to fall in love, drawn to each other despite their different backgrounds and temperaments. Jerry also struggles to detach emotionally from Tess, a tension that shadows his new relationship.
Jerry lands a job with a New York law firm and prepares to take the bar examination, while he helps Gittel rent a loft for a dance studio, which she then uses as a space for herself and other dancers. The two start planning to move in together, imagining a shared life that blends his methodical world with her artistic drive.
Gittel grows upset when she learns that Jerry’s divorce has been finalized and he hadn’t told her about it. Jerry explains that even though the divorce is finalized on paper, the bond with Tess persists in many meaningful ways. The revelation strains their romance, and they break up. With a heavy heart, Jerry decides to return to Nebraska to try to repair things with Tess.
Before long, Jerry makes a phone call to Gittel to say goodbye, and in a quiet, mutual acknowledgment they admit that they love each other.
