Arjun Singh, Nakul Kapoor works as a guide and bus driver in Jaisalmer, dreaming of becoming a famous singer. When he meets the beautiful tourist Naina Dixit, Aarti Chabria, she is impressed by his voice and encourages him to seek his luck in Bombay, leaving her address with him. Soon after, Arjun bids farewell to his brother, his sister-in-law Bhago, Navni Parihar, and his nephew, and travels to the city of dreams.
In Bombay, he meets Monto (Raghuvir Yadav), who guides him through a maze of auditions where his songs often go unheard. Undeterred, he finds a place to stay with Naina, her sisters Anu and Tuktuk, and their mother, a college professor who offers quiet support and a sense of home amidst the bustle of the metropolis.
To showcase his talent, Naina organizes an open song-and-dance show in a public park, and the performance is a success. Among the observers is a wealthy young woman, Bobby Gujral, Kim Sharma, who sees in Arjun a star and invites him to sing for a firm run by her father’s partner, Sunil Mahadevan. When Sunil refuses to get involved, Bobby persuades her father, Gujral, Dalip Tahil, to back a formal recording project that features Arjun as the main artist. With the combined backing of Bobby and Gujral, Arjun rises to fame almost overnight, and the city begins to take notice of his voice.
Yet success does not erase Arjun’s ties to Naina and the family who supported him from the start. Bobby grows possessive and becomes determined to keep Arjun for herself, even trying to control access with a gun. She eventually realizes that she cannot win him, because he loves Naina. In a moment of desperation, she attempts suicide by driving off a hill in a car. Later, Arjun is seen receiving an award for best singer and thanking Bobby, while the film reveals that Bobby, now in a fragile mental and physical state, watches him on stage and witnesses the moment he acknowledges the woman who once believed in his potential.
