Jay Singh is a wealthy British businessman who travels to Rajasthan, India to work in his father’s hotel business. He spots a woman named Trishna dancing at a hotel and is immediately drawn to her, drawn not just by her talent but by the chance to connect across social divides.
When an accident destroys her father’s Jeep and leaves her family without the means to support themselves, [Trishna] accepts a job offer from Jay and begins to work for him. Jay provides her with special treatment and generous gifts, and his status and wealth create a confusing dynamic for her. Overwhelmed by his attention and the power he wields, she isn’t sure how to respond, caught between gratitude and a sense of imbalance.
After a night out with friends, Jay tracks her down and rescues her from two men harassing her on the street. Rather than returning her to the servant quarters of the hotel, he pulls her into a secluded wooded area and makes an advance. It is implied that he rapes her, and Trishna returns home crying, shaken by what happened. The next morning she flees back to her family, hoping to forget the incident. An unwanted pregnancy results, and she ultimately has an abortion, hoping to resume life as if nothing had changed. Yet the shame cast by her father and the family’s need for income pull her back into service—she is sent to attend to her bed-bound aunt and to work in the small factory run by her uncle.
Jay tracks her down again and seems surprised that she has not tried to contact him, having interpreted the earlier night as consensual. He offers her the chance to become his girlfriend in Mumbai, and Trishna chooses to go with him, seeking a way out of the drudgery of factory labor and into a different life.
In Mumbai, Trishna accompanies Jay to events related to his interest in the film industry, where he considers investing as a producer. She begins dance classes and proves to be talented, but Jay refuses to let her pursue dancing as a career. He manipulates her into believing that she does not want to be a dancer and must stay by his side, shaping her ambitions to fit his own plans. At home, he is domineering and treats her as a servant, insisting she handle all domestic chores while he moves through social circles and business obligations.
One day, Jay has to leave for England, where his father is hospitalized after a stroke. The brush with mortality makes him feel closer to Trishna and he confesses to having slept with two other women before she moved in with him. Trusting him, Trishna reveals details about her pregnancy and abortion. Jay’s anger grows as he realizes she kept secrets from him, and he abandons her, stopping the lease on their apartment. Trishna moves in with friends from her dance class, trying to reclaim some independence.
Jay later returns to meet her, pretending it was all a misunderstanding and blaming her for not telling him about the unpaid lease. Meanwhile, a dance coordinator explains that starting a career as a dancer would require 30,000 rupees on a special card, and offers to loan her the money. Caught between indebtedness to a stranger and loyalty to Jay, she decides to return to him. His father’s illness requires him to return to the hotel in Rajasthan, where Jay offers her a job and promises to maintain their relationship in secret.
In public, Jay treats her as a servant, a ritual that gives him a disturbing mix of power and thrill. He imagines himself as the raja of the hotel—a former castle whose rooms he intends to inhabit as his own throne. After months of abuse, a distraught Trishna takes a kitchen knife while Jay sleeps and stabs him to death.
She escapes and returns to her family’s village, where her mother and younger siblings greet her with warmth, even as her father remains cold and distant. Despite appearing to be part of a normal life again, Trishna’s story ends in tragedy when she ultimately dies by stabbing herself with the same knife used to kill Jay.
This tale examines desire, power, and the devastating consequences that can unfold when control becomes the overriding currency of a relationship, leaving scars that linger long after the immediate events have passed.
